The Breakers At Rhode Island

CO, RI, MA 218

We visited The Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island, more than a year ago. We were twoย of the 300,000 visitors that year, which is roughly the number of visitors every year.

The Breakers – a Vanderbilt mansion, a national historic landmark, the most luxuriant house in a summer resort, the top Gilded Age gem, considered the social capital of America – was constructed in 1895.

Since interior photography wasn’t allowed we couldn’t take pictures, but from what we saw and learned: Italian and African marbles, and mosaics and rare woods from several countries were used to design the interior. Interestingly, the gold room in the mansion was constructed in France before disassembling and shipping the parts in airtight cases to Newport, Rhode Island, where it was re-assembled.

Steel trusses were used to make the structure fireproof.

  1. Wow ~ looks so beautiful. It must be gorgeous inside.

  2. great shots of this cool mansion – and how interesting to hear the gold room was made in France and then reassembled later – wow – tres chouette!!

    • Thanks, Y ๐Ÿ™‚ It wasn’t probably a tough job for authorities in France since they’d done somewhat similar 9 years earlier in 1886 whey they’d shipped the Statue of Liberty across, in parts.

  3. Thank you for your interest in Gwichyaa Zhee, Mahesh.

  4. We usually go down every year from Cape Cod. They have the most incredible garden show on the lawn of a near by mansion, so we generally tour the Breakers while down there. It is such an incredible place. Amazing to think people actually lived in there. Can’t imagine running around the place in a pair of blue jeans!

    • Thanks Elizabeth for sharing your thoughts ๐Ÿ™‚ I agree, it’s a beautiful mansion. Imagine, interior photography is strictly prohibited; I’ve been to other mansions and museums where nobody stopped us from taking pictures. With the Breakers, it’s perhaps the Gilded Age effect ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. One of my favorite places in the world!!! The first time I went it felt as if I’d been there before….I knew where everything was! Strange…yet comforting to be there. Blessitude

  6. That is the sort of seaside cottage I could enjoy becoming accustomed to!

  7. Amazing pictures! I went here a few years ago, actually. Absolutely incredible. I went with a group of people from school when we were reading The Great Gatsby. We had a tour of the inside and it was beautiful. The movie was actually filmed here! ๐Ÿ™‚
